Saudi police has allegedly arrested Malaysian transgender celebrity and deported her after wearing female clothing while visiting Mecca, multiple sources reported. The cosmetics entrepreneur and social media influencer, Nur Sajat, 33, posted photos of herself wearing female prayer attire during pilgrimage to social media. She has an Instagram following of over 1.4 million.
An alleged copy of her passport with her name as Muhammad Sajjad Kamaruz Zaman was circulated online. Sajat has long been hounded by Malaysian religious auhtorities over her gender identity including attempts to make her undergo a process to verify her gender.
Malaysian Minister for Islamic Affairs, Mujahid Yusof Rawa, said that he regretted Sajat’s actions. “It was advertised on Instagram as if it was not an offence,” he added.
On fears that Saudi Arabia may revoke tourist visas for Malaysians following what happened, Rawa remarked that this was why it was important for Malaysians to abide by the laws set by Saudi Arabia.
“We have to follow the rules given, especially in Mecca and Madina because that is the law so we have to respect it… These are the conditions we always remind travel agencies to respect,” he said.
