All medical personnel at Al-Azhar University Hospital have tested positive for the coronavirus, Al-Jazeera reported. Consequently on 13 May 2020, The Egyptian Medical Syndicate (EMS) called for an increase in the number of isolation hospitals for health workers.

On 13 May 2020, Vice President of Al-Azhar University and General Supervisor of Hospitals, Dr. Mahmoud Seddi, announced that the number of cases among the medical centre’s staff had increased to 135.

On 11 may 2020, President of Al-Azhar University, Dr Muhammad Al-Mahrasawi, decided to temporarily close Al-Zahra University Hospital after 35 hospital staff tested positive for coronavirus.

Eleven doctors and six nurses have reportedly died from the Covid-19 in Egypt so far, while 178 doctors have been infected, according to Ibrahim El-Zayat, an EMS council member.

On 13 May 2020, the Egyptian Health Ministry reported that coronavirus cases in Egypt had reached 10,829, with a death toll of 571.
