On 24 June 2020, Egyptian security forces raided the offices of the online al-Manassa news agency and arrested its editor-in-chief, Noura Younis, reported the agency on Twitter.

Al-Manassa said eight security officers and soldiers broke into the agency’s office on 24 June 2020, searched office computers before arresting the editor-in-chief, a human rights advocate.

Younis was taken in a mini-van to a police station in Cairo’s Maadi district, and is expected to appear before the prosecutor on 25 June 2020 for accusations of running an unlicensed website.

“Policemen claimed to be checking software licenses but did not present an arrest or search warrant,” Amnesty International said on Twitter. Amnesty urged authorities to “protect her from any torture or other ill-treatment” while in detention.

Al-Manassa rejected the charges, saying that it had presented all the necessary documentation for licensing to Egypt’s Higher Council for Media in October 2018, along with the designated $3,000 fee,

Younis formerly worked as a managing editor at Al-Masry Al-Youm, Egypt’s most popular daily, before founding al-Manassa in 2015.
